A game board and clay tablets.

Kurd Qaburstan, Iraq. about 1800 BC. First cities. Debated. Free

Debated. A game board and clay tablets were found, but the city's old name is not settled.

The site is Kurd Qaburstan, in the Erbil region of north-east Iraq. It dates to the Middle Bronze Age, about 1800 BC, almost 4,000 years ago. The clay tablets are the first of this kind found in the region, and they are still being read. The team also found a game board, storage jars, cups, plates, and bowls. Neighbourhood yards had clay drainpipes. A large building in the lower town is being studied as a palace. Some jars there are marked with a symbol.

Researchers still ask whether this city is the place old texts call Qabra, and whether the city was planned or just grew.
