Debated. A gold earring was dug up, but experts are not sure where it was made.
A metal detectorist found it in a field in West Jutland, Denmark. It is about 1,000 years old. It is built on a crescent-shaped gold plate, with enamel, gold thread, and small gold balls. The plate shows two birds beside a tree. A museum expert said it came from Byzantium or Egypt, and that it was likely a gift to a Viking chief. Only 12 similar earrings have been found. No known Viking sites lie near this field.
Experts are still puzzled about how the earring reached West Jutland.
