A first king's tomb, with a jade mask.

Caracol, Belize. 331 AD. Greece and Rome. Known. Free

Known. Archaeologists report the tomb of Te K'ab Chaak, called the first ruler of the Maya city of Caracol.

Caracol is in Belize. He took the throne in 331 AD. His tomb lay at the base of a royal family shrine, with eleven pottery vessels, carved bone tubes, jade jewellery, and a mask made of jade pieces.

Archaeologists still ask whether the city of Teotihuacan, in central Mexico, brought a new way of ruling to the Maya.
