A lost way of drawing animals.

Drysdale River, Kimberley. between about 9,000 and 5,000 years ago. Before writing. Debated. Free

These pictures were not a new find in the ground. They were already on the cliffs, and had been mixed in with an older style.

Debated. A plainer way of drawing animals has been set apart, but its age is a range, not one sure year.

In the north-eastern Kimberley, along the Drysdale and King George rivers, 98 pictures at 22 sites were studied. They show animals, mostly kangaroos and wallabies, in simple outlines, often with no colour fill, standing still in side view. They were painted over older art and under or beside later art, so they are placed between about 9,000 and 5,000 years ago.

The page asks why artists returned to plain animal drawings, and it does not give one sure reason.
