More than 200 steep pyramids in the sand

Meroë, Sudan. around 300 BC. Greece and Rome. Known. Free

Known. More than 200 steep stone pyramids stand at Meroë.

The pyramids are at Meroë in Sudan. People lived in the city from the beginning of the 9th century BC. Around 300 BC it became the capital of the Kingdom of Kush, and it stayed the capital until the middle of the 4th century AD. The pyramids are built of large sandstone blocks. They are smaller than the pyramids of Egypt, and their sides rise more steeply. They stand in three cemeteries, called South, North, and West. Most of the tombs were plundered in ancient times. Pictures in the tombs show the dead mummified, covered with jewellery, and laid in wooden coffins. A wine vessel from Athens, from the 5th century BC, and a silver wine cup from Italy, from the 1st century AD, were also found.
