A mummy under a city street

Puente Piedra, Peru. more than 1,000 years ago. Last 1,000 years. Known. Free

Known. A mummy was found a short way under a city street.

The grave is in Puente Piedra, in Lima, Peru, under Santa Patricia Avenue. A woman was buried there more than 1,000 years ago. Archaeologists link her to the Chancay people, who lived on this coast from about AD 1000 to 1470, before the Inca took the region. She had been placed in a burial bundle. Pots and gourds were with her.

An archaeologist says the well-made pots may mean she was important. That is not certain.
