Debated. Long fields were raised above wet ground, with canals beside them.
The fields are in La Mojana, in northern Colombia. They were used from the first centuries BC until about the 11th century AD. Together they cover more than 500,000 hectares. In one patch of 500 hectares near San Marcos, researchers mapped 1,601 raised ridges and 63 house platforms. The ridges once stood about 1.4 metres above the canal bottoms, so floodwater could move in the canals.
A new study argues that local groups could have built this without one ruler. It does not prove that there were no rulers.
