No one has shown that this is the biggest platform of its time, or that it is older than every Maya city.
Debated. A huge earth platform was mapped in Tabasco, Mexico.
Aguada Fénix had looked like a natural rise in the ground. It is about 1,413 metres from north to south and 399 metres from east to west, and it stands 10 to 15 metres high. Nine causeways run out from it. Researchers date the building to between about 1000 and 800 BC. They call it the oldest monumental structure yet found in the Maya area. Another site, San Lorenzo, has a plateau of greater volume. No clear sculptures of high-status people were found.
People still argue whether a platform this large could be raised without powerful rulers.
