Hundreds of sealed wine jars.

Umm Al-Qaab, Egypt. about 5,000 years old. First cities. Debated. Free

Debated. The jars are in the page, but it does not show that Merneith was certainly a queen.

At Umm Al-Qaab in Abydos, hundreds of sealed jars were found in Merneith's tomb. The page says the wine left inside is about 5,000 years old. Other burial goods were found too. Writing from the tomb says she held a great position in the central government. Her name is linked to the goddess Neith and means Beloved by Neith. The page says she may have taken charge after her husband Djet died, while their son Den was still young. A seal calls her King's Mother. Another list of rulers leaves her name out.

Whether Merneith ruled on her own is still argued.
