The page does not show that the hero Perseus founded the city.
Myth. A Greek story says Perseus founded Mycenae. The graves are a separate find.
Mycenae stands between two hills in the southern Greek Peloponnese, about 280 metres above the plain. It was a settlement between 1700 and 1200 BC. The great walls date to about 1350 BC. In Grave Circle A, diggers found shaft graves used for leading people, and gold objects in the burials. One grave held a gold mask, later called the mask of Agamemnon. Another grave circle, Grave Circle B, was dug later. Nine round tombs stand in the area, including one called the Treasury of Atreus.
Archaeologists still do not agree that the gold mask belonged to Agamemnon.
