Debated. The signs are not agreed to be a full writing system.
Near Kastoria, in northern Greece, a wooden tablet was found at a Neolithic lake village. The page dates the tablet to about 5260 BC. Signs are carved on it. Other clay pieces from the site carry the same kind of signs. The village was lived in from about 5700 BC to about 3300 BC. The signs have not been read.
People still argue whether the signs are writing. The page says many historians call them proto-writing: marks that carry only a little information, not a whole language.
